The role of the oil and gas industry in global development

The oil and gas industry remains the foundation of the global economy, providing more than 50% of humanity’s energy consumption. Despite the growth of renewable energy sources (RES), fossil resources retain a key role in energy security, industry, and socio-economic development

The role of the oil and gas industry in global development

Economic engine
For many countries, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, and the United States, oil and gas are the mainstay of budget revenues. For example, in 2022, the sector accounted for 15% of Russia’s GDP and 8% of U.S. GDP. Hydrocarbon exports finance infrastructure projects, education and healthcare in exporting countries. In addition, the industry creates millions of jobs: in the United States alone, it employs over 10 million people.

Industry and innovation
Hydrocarbons are critically important for the production of plastics, fertilizers, medicines, and synthetic materials. Modern electronics, transportation, and agriculture are impossible without them. Technological progress in the industry, such as hydraulic fracturing and digitalization of deposits, increases production efficiency, reducing costs and the environmental footprint.

Energy transfer and sustainability
Oil and gas companies are actively investing in low-carbon solutions: CO₂ capture, blue hydrogen production, and renewable energy development. Shell and BP plan to invest up to 50% of their investments in green projects by 2030. This helps to reduce emissions while maintaining the stability of energy systems during the transition to a sustainable economy.

Challenges and prospects
The industry is facing climate demands, but its complete replacement with renewable energy is not yet possible due to the intermittency of the latter. Hydrocarbons will remain a “transitional fuel” for the coming decades, providing a basic load in power grids.

Thus, the oil and gas industry not only supports the current needs of humanity, but also adapts to global challenges, remaining an indispensable link in the global economic and environmental system.
